Project Summary

The Hotel Alyeska in Girdwood, Alaska is a luxury hotel with 304 guest rooms, numerous restaurants, meeting facilities, and a tram that delivers skiers to the top of the ski resort. The Hotel is in a remote location and can suffer from grid outages.

In 2013, Alyeska installed two 250KW FlexEnergy turbines with internal heat exchangers in one of Alaska’s first combined heat and power (CHP) co-generation applications in a resort hotel. Hot water from the turbines supplements demand for the Hotel’s hot water loads, including space heating and has extended the life of the Hotel’s installed boilers. The two micro turbines deliver enough 190-degree water to provide much of the heat required for the guest rooms, the common areas, and snow melt.

In addition, the two FlexEnergy micro turbines also provide a significant portion of the electrical power the Hotel requires to operate. The Hotel Alyeska has also negotiated a purchase power agreement with Chugach Electric, the local power utility, to sell back to the grid, excess generation during off-peak demand periods. This agreement allows the Hotel to sell power back to the grid when it has excess generation capacity, and to purchase power when the Hotel demand exceeds its installed generation capability.

Installation of these two FlexEnergy micro turbines allows Alyeska to shift a portion of its power needs from grid power, to on-site generated power using more reliable natural gas.
